Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Pre-Paid Phone card

  • Typically a pre-paid phone card is a kind of credit card which can be used from home or away from it to call the destination place for which the card is intended to serve. You pay a fixed amount up front which may be for units, minutes or Dollars.
  • Similarly as above an E-Calling card which is also a form of pre-paid phone card but which is available on internet which can be used by an Instant PIN.
  • An Instant PIN is one which is delivered to customer on purchase of calling card on internet either to customer's e-mail address or instantly on screen or both. Customer pays for the card before the PIN is delivered.
  • An International calling card is one which can be used to call from one country to another. Each international calling card is different and will be restricted to use in the countries with which the phone card company has tie-up.
What are different Kind of charges on Phone-card

If you are getting a card for a very low rate then you should be wary of hidden charges that might be associated with a card and other possible taxes. Shown below are a few types of charges that may come with a card.

  • Charge Based On Time: The actual time you spend on a call after Connection either in units or time increment in minutes. The time increments vary, which is usually called roudning.
  • Connection Fee: A one off charge for initiating a single call. Each and every time you use the card and your party answers, you will be charged a connection fee which will be deducted from the available minutes. This fee is deducted from the card value either in money or in minutes.
  • Weekly/Bi-Weekly/Monthly Service/Maintenance Fees: Most of the cards come with a maintenance fee which will be charged at a fixed time interval like weekly or semi monthly or monthly fee.
One thing which a customer should be aware of is that the first maintenance fee is usually applied, immediately upon the completion of first call or at 12 in the night when the first call is made or after 24 hours the first call made. The fee is deducted either in minutes or dollar value from the card.
  • Pay Phone Surcharge: Nearly all phone card calls originating from a Pay Phone are charged a fee per call and this is required by federal law.
  • Cellular Phone Charges: All calls made to cellular phones are charged at substantially higher rates than the advertised land line rates, unless other wise specifically mentioned.
  • Taxes: Some cards are designed to apply a tax for the dollar value of the card used in that call, as soon the call is finished. The tax percentage may vary from card to card. The best way to get most out of those cards would be to use all the available minutes in a single call, so that at the end of the call there is no amount left, hence no taxes applied.
How does a phone-card work

  • How are the minutes deducted and who keeps track of it?
As calls are made, the number of usable minutes is automatically deducted from the card balance by the phone card provider. Connection fees and surcharges are converted into minutes and deducted in the same way as the call is made. This is normally recorded on the calling card company's computer system.
  • How do I know I am running out of minutes on a prepaid card?
On most cards you are notified how many minutes are remaining at the beginning of each call. In general you will be interrupted during your conversation when you are down to the last minute.
  • Is there a charge for a busy signal?
There should not be any deduction in minutes or in amount of money for a busy signal.
  • Will I get the same rate per minute rate on every call I make?
For flat rate card with no surcharges you should get it. If it has connection/maintenance/surcharge/tax - the per minute rate will vary based on the call duration.
